"YOUNGSTOWN — City Council on Wednesday approved the $48,000 purchase of four touchless hand-washing stations by the Youngstown City Health District to be put in several locations in the city for public use.

The stations will be placed in Federal Plaza, the Eugenia Atkinson Recreation Center, Youngstown Municipal Court and city hall.

Health Commissioner Erin Bishop told council members at Monday’s finance committee that the stations are placed in areas where there are high levels of traffic.

'People are very concerned that people aren’t washing their hands,' Bishop said. 'If we have these in an open area where people can utilize them, I think it’s important.'

The four stations were purchased with CARES Act funds the city received early in the pandemic to buy equipment for Youngstown City Health District.

Bishop said the city can move the stations around the city to put them in other locations or use them for events, such as at the Covelli Centre or the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre.

'We can have them forever,' Bishop said. 'We can utilize them when we have outdoor activities.'

Bishop said staff from each location of the stations will clean and stock the stations.

'I think we will get good use out of them,' Bishop said.

The touchless hand-washing stations were purchased from Personal Protected in New Middletown, which also produced units for Youngstown State University."
